About Starling

Imagine giving patients the power of real-time health insight, simply by using the bathroom. Starling Medical is building the first clinically-backed, at-home urinalysis platform designed to support patients with chronic health conditions.

We are backed by prestigious organizations like Y Combinator (YC) and AARP, and our mission is clear: prevent hospitalizations by providing immediate, actionable insights into a patient’s urinary health. Our first product in development is focused on non-invasively monitoring the risk of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), a major health concern. If you’re excited about leveraging technology to build a product that impacts daily health and keeps people out of the hospital, you belong with us.

As our first Technical Support Engineer, you will be the critical link between our devices in the field and our core engineering teams. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Front-line Triage: Be the first responder to bugs, device feedback, and technical issues reported from our users.
  • Deep Dive Debugging: Leverage your background in electrical, firmware, or biomedical engineering to debug, troubleshoot, and tinker with hardware and software issues.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Determine the root cause of issues before escalating to the appropriate core teams, including Manufacturing, Product, and Data Science.
  • User Experience Champion: Work closely with our Program Coordinator to ensure our users have a reliable, seamless, and high-quality experience with the Starling product. Act as the voice of the customer internally, capturing critical feedback to directly influence product roadmaps and competitive strategy.
  • Documentation & Organization: Maintain detailed records of issues, resolutions, and trends to inform product improvement. Develop internal documentation, best-practice guides, and training to help scale our program methodologies across the entire organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a methodical problem solver and highly organized.
  • Experience with hardware and/or firmware troubleshooting and debugging.
  • Excellent communication skills for translating technical issues to non-technical partners (users/Program Coordinator) and clearly presenting findings to technical teams.
  • Has worked on or been a part of the development of a product that included BLE and i2c components.

Tools & Methodologies:

  • Proficiency with project management tools such as Github and Notion.
  • Used Altium or similar PCB development tools.

The Impact

This role is pivotal to Starling’s growth and clinical validation. Starling is actively scaling its patient cohort through launches with providers and commencing clinical studies and trials for upcoming publications and regulatory submissions.

  • Ensure Patient Success & Data Quality: You will directly ensure that every device in the field—whether used by a customer or enrolled in a critical study—is performing optimally, providing a great user experience, and delivering the high-quality data Starling needs to improve patient health.
  • Scale Operations: You will be involved in preparing and kitting devices for deployment in the field, working closely with the Manufacturing and Product teams as we scale our operations.
  • Influence Product Development: The insights you gather from field performance will directly influence future hardware and software iterations, making you a core contributor to our product’s evolution.
